Born in Montréal, Québec, Émilie Samson is a New York based jazz vocalist, composer, and educator. She graduated with honours from McGill University, where she completed her Bachelor in Jazz Performance, being awarded the mention of “outstanding performance in jazz voice”. In 2017, Émilie relocated to New York City after receiving a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Theo Bleckmann, Kate McGarry and Jo Lawry.
In Montreal, Émilie was active both on the jazz and classical scene, leading her own group in jazz clubs and singing in different classical and contemporary chorus. In New York, Émilie is an active performer and she has performed in several venues including The 55 Bar, Harlem Stage and Lincoln Center.
She is a versatile singer who touched many different styles, being jazz, Brazilian music, musical theatre, classical and popular music. She has studied composition with some in-demand composers such as John Hollenbeck, Christine Jensen, Phil Markowitz and David Liebman. Émilie composes and writes arrangements both for herself and other vocalists, and she is currently working on her upcoming EP on which she’ll release original arrangements and compositions.
Through her music, Émilie talks about the human experience through time. In her arrangements, she gives a new life to an old song, making songs that were written almost a hundred years ago relevant again. Her compositions are more introspective, showing a different side of her personality.
