Kris Monson is a bassist and composer, and a recent graduate of the Manhattan School of Music Masters of Music program. A product of the rich central Virginia jazz community, Kris studied with bassist Pete Spaar and trumpeter John D’earth while an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia. After completing a double major in systems engineering and music at UVA, Kris has continued to play professionally all over the Washington, D.C. and New York City metropolitan areas in venues such as the Kennedy Center, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and Smoke Jazz Club. Kris currently resides in New York City and is in his final semester at MSM, studying under the tutelage of Buster Williams, Orin O’Brien, David Grossman, Stefon Harris, Phil Markowitz, and Jim McNeely. As a composer, he has premiered works at the Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and the Manhattan School of Music.

Michael Shapira grew up in Long Island, New York with his mother, father and two older sisters. He began taking an interest in music at the age of 10 while in elementary school. Enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music since 2017, Michael now lives in West Harlem and gigs often around the city at several notable venues including Dizzy’s Club, Kitano Jazz, Tomi Jazz and the 55 Bar. In 2019, Michael also was chosen by Jazz at Lincoln Center to share the stage with Erica Von Kleist in Whitefish, Montana for a MLK memorial concert, in which he had the opportunity to work with high school students in her program as well as perform alongside her in a state-wide broadcasted radio performance. Michael is also very experienced in performing in musicals, having done many of the Manhattan School of Music productions, with several being under the direction of notable music director David Loud, as well as in summer stock and community theaters. He also has experience in theme park work, having worked with the entertainment group RWS in Kings Dominion theme park the summer of 2019.

Saxophonist and Bandleader
Austin Zhang is a multi-disciplinary artist who uses composition, improvisation, videography, photography, and writing in his work. Mentored by masters of music from George Garzone and Jaleel Shaw to Wynton Marsalis and Stefon Harris, Austin has had incredible examples to follow artistically and personally. During his high school and collegiate career, Austin took his talents to Jazz at Lincoln Center, Newport Jazz Festival, and Carnegie Hall and on stage with the likes of Terri Lyne Carrington and Wycliffe Gordon. While studying at the Manhattan School of Music, Austin began to explore other avenues of artistry as he immersed himself into great works of Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, Mary Shelley, and others. Today, Austin serves as the Artistic Director for Brave Sound Productions and regularly with his two main projects, The Beehive Quartet and Honesty Band.
